St Louis Arch - Stainless Steel Construction

August 2, 2015

This summer I took a break from Indianapolis to visit St Louis. I had been to the city a few times passing through but this time I made it into the arch the city is now famous for. I had to go inside the arch and learn more about its construction. The arch is constructed of reinforced concrete with stainless steel exterior and was completed in 1965. It stands 630 feet tall. Architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Fred Severud intend for the arch to last 1000 years if maintained. Wow!

After the arch we made it to Busch Stadium for a night baseball game in the blistering heat.

A shot I took of the arch just before going inside. The visitors center entrance is below the arch in the middle of the span. You ride to the top in a small pod similar to a ferris wheel the designer came up with becasue no elevator company at the time would bid on the design deeming it too risky!
